Palazzo Mazzarotta – a 16th‑century building in the heart of Campobasso

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 22:47

History and description

Located in the historic center of Campobasso, Palazzo Mazzarotta is an elegant 16th‑century building that has undergone several modifications over the centuries. Initially belonging to a religious confraternity, it was acquired in the 18th century by the noble Mazzarotta family, from whom it takes its name. This is testified by the family’s coat of arms on the façade, depicting a ship on rough seas and a twelve‑pointed star. Externally, the palace features a sober stone façade with a finely decorated 19th‑century portal. Inside, it preserves spacious rooms with vaulted ceilings, exposed stone walls, and architectural details that reflect the transformations from the Renaissance to the modern age. Since 1995, the palace has housed the Museo Provinciale Sannitico, which highlights the archaeological heritage of the Samnite people and the Molise region.

Curiosities

One of the most appreciated rooms of the museum is the one dedicated to female funerary objects, which reveal the central role of women in Samnite society.

Access

Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, the palace and museum can be visited with an admission ticket of €6, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in the city’s historic center, the palace can be reached by car (with parking available nearby), by urban bus, or on foot.

Palazzo Mazzarotta, together with the Samnite Museum, is a must‑see destination for those wishing to discover the ancient roots of Samnium and appreciate how architecture has preserved and transformed this cultural heritage over time.
