History and description
According to tradition, the Palazzo degli Anziani was built by Queen Galla Placidia in 425 AD as a Byzantine senatorial seat. Later destroyed by the Saracens, it was rebuilt only in 1270 by Margaritone d’Arezzo in Romanesque‑Gothic style. Damaged by a fire, it was restored between the 1560s and 1570s by Pellegrino Tibaldi, and later by the Pamphilj family, until the City Council returned to the palace in 2011. Structurally, the building consists of seven floors, the upper ones opening onto ogival arches in white Conero stone. Its façade features a clock with a single hand, and nearby are some archaeological remains.
Curiosities
The palace presents a striking contrast between its upper and lower parts: the upper section faces the port, while the lower one faces the city, creating a very original architectural and urban solution.
Access
Almost always freely accessible, the palace can also be visited during the FAI (Italian Heritage Fund) days with a small contribution starting from €3, without reservation.
How to reach it
Located in Piazza Benvenuto Stracca, the palace can be reached by bus or on foot from the historic center. If arriving by car, parking is available in the surrounding areas.
An important architectural and historical landmark, the Palazzo degli Anziani is a cornerstone of Ancona’s cultural heritage and an unmissable stop for visitors.
