Pablo Atchugarry — Sculpting Light

Period: 19 May - 21 June 2026

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome hosts "Sculpting Light", a solo exhibition by Pablo Atchugarry curated by Gabriele Simongini. The show traces roughly thirty years of the artist's practice, with a focus on his sculptural work in Carrara marble.

Why see it

The selection presents forms that suggest trees, columns, flames and bodies, conceived to interact with light and create a contemplative experience. It highlights how different materials are shaped to dialogue with the surrounding space.

  • Works on display: 53 sculptures
  • Materials: Carrara marble, wood from centuries-old olive trees, alabaster, enameled bronze, steel
  • Monumental works: three sculptures positioned on the museum staircase, including "Search of the Future"
  • Donation: the white marble work "Splendore" has entered the museum's collection

Practical information

Venue: Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Viale delle Belle Arti 131, Rome

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–19:00; closed on Monday.

Tickets and details: check the gallery's official site for ticket prices, reductions and visitor services (gnamc.cultura.gov.it).

Context and notes

Born in Montevideo in 1954 and living in Italy, Atchugarry approaches sculpture as a spiritual and formal pursuit. The exhibition pairs recent works with historical pieces, mapping the artist's relationship with Western sculptural traditions and diverse materials. Two catalogues published for the show provide critical essays and documentation of the installation.
