Pablo Atchugarry — Sculpting Light

Dates: 19 May - 21 June 2026

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome presents "Sculpting Light", a solo exhibition by Pablo Atchugarry curated by Gabriele Simongini. The show traces roughly thirty years of the artist's sculptural practice, with an emphasis on his work in Carrara statuary marble.

Why visit

The exhibition highlights Atchugarry's metamorphic forms — reminiscent of trees, columns, flames and bodies — designed to engage with light and to create a contemplative experience.

  • Works on display: 53 sculptures
  • Materials: marble (Carrara statuario), wood from ancient olive trunks, alabaster, enameled bronze, steel
  • Monumental pieces: three large sculptures placed on the museum stairs (including "Search of the Future")
  • Gift to the collection: the marble work "Splendore" has been donated to the museum
  • New dialogues: several works are displayed alongside major pieces from the permanent collection

Visitor information

Venue: Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Viale delle Belle Arti 131, Rome

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–19:00; closed on Monday.

Context

Born in Montevideo in 1954 and long based in Italy, Atchugarry regards sculpture as a spiritual and formal pursuit. This exhibition juxtaposes recent and earlier works to spotlight his dialogue with Western sculptural tradition and his exploration of diverse materials, from refined marble to large-scale steel installations.

Two catalogues published for the exhibition provide photographic documentation and critical essays by the curator and other contributors.
