When: 17–18 March — Who: 16 members of the Oxford University Byzantine Society.
An academic delegation from the University of Oxford will undertake a short study itinerary in Sicily, centered on archaeological sites relevant to the late antique and Byzantine Mediterranean. Field visits will allow participants to examine two important archaeological areas in southeastern Sicily.
Cava d'Ispica (17 March): a multi-period archaeological landscape spanning from prehistory to the medieval period, notable for rock-cut settlements, funerary contexts and a landscape that illuminates settlement dynamics over time.
Kaukana (18 March): a coastal site near Santa Croce Camerina important for remains and settlements dating to the late antique and Byzantine periods, offering insights into urban development, maritime trade and territorial change between late antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Encourage scholarly exchange between international students and researchers and local heritage professionals.
Observe and discuss in situ architectural elements, material evidence and landscape contexts that inform studies of the late antique and Byzantine eras.
Support the promotion and research-based enhancement of these sites and explore possibilities for future collaboration.
The delegation will be led by archaeologist Saverio Scerra, who will provide onsite guidance and interpretation. The visit aims to strengthen ties between the international academic community and the archaeological heritage of southeastern Sicily.
Visitors seeking practical information about site openings and guided tours should contact the relevant archaeological offices or local authorities for current timetables, access rules and booking procedures.
