Offagna, the medieval village built on tuff

Autore: Redazione 09/08/2025 12:43

The village of Offagna first appeared in written records in the 10th century.

It was presented as Castellum Offanie and stood on a block of tuff overlooking the plain.

In the 18th century, it underwent a series of transformations that enriched it with fine architecture.

What to see in the village of Offagna

The historic center of Offagna can be visited quickly, but it deserves attention for its details and the contrast between past and present. On the main street, one notices the 19th-century trilobed window of the old Monte di Pietà, a sign of a bygone era. At the road’s fork stands the Church of the Holy Sacrament (1787), a Neoclassical jewel by Andrea Vici, also known for the Monastery of Santa Zita (1767), a fortified yet sober structure.

The fortress (1454–56), an example of military architecture between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, features a five-story keep, Ghibelline battlements, and a patrol walkway, and today houses the Museum of Arms and the Paolucci Museum.

Also worth mentioning is the Church of Santa Lucia, with 17th-century paintings and a sacristy renovated by Vici. Outside the center, Villa Montegallo stands out with its double staircase and Italian-style garden, as well as Villa Malacari (1668), a wine estate with splendid 18th-century floors and a charming garden.

Events and traditions of the village

From May to December, Offagna hosts traditional events full of charm. In May, the Offagna in Fiore flower market exhibition showcases indoor, garden, and vegetable plants. In July, the Medieval Festivals transform the village with people in period costumes, historical reenactments, theatrical performances, and markets, bringing the atmosphere of the Middle Ages back to life. In September, the Fiera del Colombaccio features exhibitions of farmyard animals, local products, and handicrafts. In December, the Christmas Markets enliven the town during the second and third weekends with Christmas items and regional specialties.

What to see around this village

The surroundings of Offagna offer many attractions to discover. A short distance away is Ancona, the regional capital, with its historic port, the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, and the National Archaeological Museum of the Marche. Also unmissable is a visit to Numana, a charming town on the Adriatic Sea, famous for its beaches and old village. For nature lovers, the Conero Park offers splendid panoramic trails and hidden coves.
