Nino Springolo (1886–1975) at Museo Bailo, Treviso

From 14 March to 1 November 2026 the Museo Bailo in Treviso presents a retrospective devoted to Nino Springolo, curated by Fabrizio Malachin. Promoted by the Municipal Museums of Treviso with support from local institutions and the Chamber of Commerce, the exhibition retraces the work of one of the most distinctive painters of early 20th-century Veneto.

Exhibition layout

Nearly one hundred paintings and studies from public and private collections illustrate Springolo's artistic development. The show is organized into four thematic sections that highlight the painter's formal choices and poetic concerns.

  • Landscapes: from early divisionist experiments to the mature large-scale views of the post-war decades, nature serves as Springolo's main field of observation.
  • Portraits: works and preparatory studies that emphasize drawing and structural composition, favoring everyday humanity over grandiose rhetoric.
  • Still lifes: intimate arrangements of domestic objects where the artist studies coloured shadows and tonal contrasts.
  • "I due compagni": the final room, inspired by Giovanni Comisso's novel, examines Springolo's relationships with figures such as Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini, presenting him as an independent and thoughtful interlocutor in the Venetian avant-garde.

Why visit

The retrospective offers a renewed appreciation of Springolo's production, emphasizing his independence from dominant movements and the consistency of a practice rooted in discipline and reflection. It is an opportunity to discover an artist who synthesised diverse influences into a personal and measured language.
