Nick Brandt — The Day May Break: Major Exhibition at Gallerie d'Italia, Turin

From March 18 to September 6, 2026, Gallerie d'Italia in Piazza San Carlo presents The Day May Break. The Light at the End of Day, the retrospective showcasing for the first time all four chapters of Nick Brandt's global series. Curated by Arianna Rinaldo, the exhibition features 63 large-format photographs and offers a concentrated visual reflection on the current environmental emergency.

Far from a mere record of damage, the show proposes what the curator defines as a harsh yet poetic perspective, seeking traces of dignity and hope shared between humans and animals. For Brandt, the London-born photographer (1964), this project marks a critical development from his earlier work, where majestic portraits of African wildlife were rendered with a commemorative, high-aesthetic language.

What to expect

The exhibition follows a chronological layout documenting the project's development across four chapters:

  • Chapter One (2021) — shot in Kenya and Zimbabwe, depicting sanctuaries and spaces affected by poaching and habitat loss.
  • Chapter Two (2022) — photographs from Bolivia, a biodiversity-rich country facing fires and floods.
  • SINK / RISE (2023) — work produced in the Fiji islands, looking ahead to near-future scenarios for communities and environments.
  • Chapter Four — completes the global narrative and the series' arc.

A key technical choice in this series is Brandt's method of photographing humans and animals simultaneously in the same frame, avoiding digital composites. This approach lends the images a suspended, emotionally charged authenticity.

Why visit

The exhibition appeals both to followers of contemporary photography and to visitors seeking an artistic, critical interpretation of climate change. Brandt merges aesthetic rigor with ethical engagement: from monumental natural portraits to a narrative-driven practice that exposes social and ecological consequences of environmental collapse.
