Digital upgrade arrives in sensitive historic areas. In the medieval center of Maratea, on the slopes of Monte San Biagio, a project is underway to bring ultra-fast fiber while protecting the town’s architectural and urban character.
Works are carried out using low-impact methods: technicians perform much of the installation by hand, removing paving stones individually, tagging them, and restoring each piece to its original position once the cabling is completed.
The project is part of a broader connectivity push supported by the PNRR and targeted investments: in the Basilicata region more than 302,000 housing units are already connected and FTTH coverage has exceeded 54%. The network now reaches notable points along Monte San Biagio, connecting several symbolic addresses high on the slopes.
This approach demonstrates that modernization and conservation can coexist: by integrating digital infrastructure beneath the urban fabric without changing its appearance, small historic centers can upgrade services and attractiveness while safeguarding their identity.
