Monumenti Aperti is a nationwide initiative focused on promoting and interpreting local heritage. Born from a grassroots experience in the late 1990s, the project has grown into a recurring program that brings historic sites closer to communities and visitors. The 2026 edition marks the 30th anniversary with extensive openings and guided visits.
The program runs from April through November 2026 and features over 800 sites located in 18 Italian regions. The events include access to monuments, palaces, archaeological areas, churches and public spaces, with guided tours led by cultural professionals.
The program connects urban centers and smaller towns, offering visits that range from necropolises and crypts to historic theatres, villas and merchant chapels. Many locations host thematic tours as well as music and performing arts events to complement the historical narrative.
Most activities are free, though some events may require booking. Practical tips:
Monumenti Aperti provides a hands-on way to explore the history of places through guided experiences, fostering civic engagement and care for cultural heritage. It is a chance to visit sites not always open to the public and to support local communities in heritage conservation.
Practical note: keep an eye on program updates during the event months to catch special openings and local initiatives.
