Scuola italiana is a group exhibition that highlights contemporary Italian painting at Palazzo Merulana - Fondazione Elena e Claudio Cerasi in Rome. Curated by Gianluca Marziani, the show begins a programmatic journey that reconsiders the canvas as the central expressive device of Italian painting.
The exhibition draws on the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Collection, which maps key moments in twentieth-century and contemporary Italian painting. The curatorial intent is to stage a conversation between different works and practices, proposing a contemporary "school" of painting where the canvas remains the primary site of exploration and expression.
The first chapter spotlights Nicola Pucci, presented through a selection framed as "New Magical Realism." The works on display emphasize narrative hints, formal tensions and a renewed focus on color as a vehicle for mood and storytelling.
The exhibition offers a focused view on how contemporary Italian painting reworks twentieth-century legacies, providing interpretive keys to the current artistic scene and showcasing works with strong pictorial and narrative qualities.
