Naples: council backs cultural funding and urban regeneration projects

The Naples City Council concluded a session lasting over eight hours with the approval of 12 measures out of 14. Key decisions include funding for cultural initiatives in suburban areas and a set of urban regeneration projects.

  • €889,000 from the National Fund for Live Performance 2026 allocated to cultural activities in peripheral neighborhoods;
  • More than €637,000 approved for the transformation of the Quadrivio di Secondigliano into a public garden, reclaiming the site connected to the 1996 incident;
  • Planned upgrades for Piazza Garibaldi, the Maschio Angioino and the seafront between Piazza Vittoria and Molosiglio;
  • Two motions approved to name a public space after Pietro Ingrao and to grant honorary citizenship to Franco Grillini;
  • The measure on the gates of the Galleria Umberto I was referred back to committee for technical and artistic review, with the aim of returning it to the Council on May 12.

According to a statement from Councillor Teresa Armato, the session was «productive» and seeks to support cultural activity in the suburbs through national funding and targeted urban regeneration. The deputy mayor for urban planning noted the technical and artistic complexity of the Galleria gates project, developed in coordination with the Superintendency.
