Reopening of the Fontanelle Cemetery in Naples

The Fontanelle Cemetery, a monumental site in the Rione Sanità district of Naples, officially reopens to the public on Saturday, 18 April 2026. The inauguration will involve local community groups, schools, parishes and third-sector organisations.

The restoration and enhancement project was implemented through a public–private partnership and included maintenance works, improved visitor facilities and removal of architectural barriers to make the site more accessible to residents and tourists.

The reopening also includes social measures: training courses for local young people were organised and new jobs linked to site management and conservation have been created.

Practical information

  • Inauguration date: 18 April 2026
  • Opening hours: open six days a week, from 10:00 to 18:00 (last admission at 17:15).
  • Closures: closed on Wednesdays; also closed on 25 December.
  • Admission: the inauguration includes a community march; after that the site will be accessible free of charge with staggered entries until 18:00. From 19 April the cemetery will be regularly open to everyone.
  • Accessibility: removal of architectural barriers, a new ticket office and restroom facilities to improve visitor welcome.

Why visit

The Fontanelle Cemetery is a former ossuary covering more than 3,000 square metres, preserving historical traces and local rituals such as the tradition of the "souls" adoption. Its reopening is an occasion to explore local history, support urban regeneration projects and appreciate the cultural value of the Rione Sanità community.
