The Church of Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa presents "The Aprons of Mary", a solo exhibition by painter Pino Biggi, curated by Paola Marini. The opening is set for Tuesday 12 May 2026 at 12:00. Admission is free.
Three dramatized readings of "Novelle, quasi fiabe", unpublished writings by the artist, are scheduled during the exhibition. Readings are performed by Daniela Bertini and produced by the theatre company of "Il gabbiano". Sessions take place at 18:00 on:
The selection highlights paintings in which Biggi depicts only the lower half of seated Marian figures — an iconographic focus that evokes the ancient symbol of maternal welcome in Christian imagery. The installation is conceived to engage in a dialogue between contemporary painting and the historic church interior.
Pino Biggi (Fossola di Carrara, 7 April 1930 – Arena Metato, 11 June 2019) worked as a painter, poet, writer and sculptor. Active from the 1950s through 2015, his production has been the subject of renewed attention in posthumous exhibitions. This spring presentation in Pisa gathers works that illustrate a creative strand matured by the artist in the 1990s.
