Museum and Archaeological Park of Egnazia: A Journey into the Messapian Past of Apulia

Autore: Redazione 27/08/2025 16:34

The Museum and Archaeological Park of Egnazia, located in the municipality of Fasano in the province of Brindisi, is one of the most important and fascinating archaeological sites in Apulia. Here, the ruins of an ancient Messapian and Roman city merge with a modern museum, offering visitors an immersive journey through the millennia-old history of this land.

The History of Ancient Gnathia

The ancient Gnathia, or Egnazia, has a history spanning over 1,500 years. Founded by the Messapians around the 7th century BC, the city became one of the main centers of Messapian civilization thanks to its strategic coastal position and its imposing Messapian Walls. Its importance grew further with the arrival of the Romans, who transformed it into a flourishing municipium and chose it as the final stop on the famous Via Traiana—a major road connecting Brindisi to Rome. The city was eventually abandoned in the 5th century AD due to invasions and socio-economic changes, leaving behind ruins that testify to its glorious past.

The Archaeological Park: The Ruins of an Ancient City

At the heart of the site lies the Archaeological Park, a vast area that allows visitors to walk among the remains of what was once a thriving city. The tour winds through ruins from different eras:

  • The Messapian Walls: impressive and well-preserved, these double-faced walls demonstrate the city’s grandeur and defensive skill.
  • The Acropolis: the highest part of the city, where the remains of temples and sanctuaries can still be seen.
  • The Roman City: walking along the Via Traiana, visitors can admire the forum, the civil basilica, the amphitheater, and the remains of private houses.
  • The Necropolises: the park includes an extensive burial area with tombs from various periods, ranging from the Messapian to the Roman era.

The Museum: Where History Comes to Life

Adjacent to the park, the National Archaeological Museum of Egnazia was designed to tell the story of the city through the artifacts unearthed during excavations. The exhibition is divided into several sections:

  • Prehistory: a room dedicated to the earliest settlements in the area.
  • The Bronze and Iron Ages: a section documenting the formation of the first communities.
  • The Messapian Age: the core of the museum, featuring ceramics, terracottas, and funerary goods that illustrate the art and culture of the Messapian people.
  • The Roman Age: a section rich in statues, mosaics, and everyday objects that narrate the life of the city under Roman rule.
