Museum of Anatomical Waxes “Clemente Susini”: A Fascinating Journey Through Science, Art, and Histor

Autore: Redazione 28/08/2025 09:43

The Museum of Anatomical Waxes “Clemente Susini” in Cagliari is unlike any other museum. It is a scientific and artistic institution of exceptional value, offering a unique and detailed look at the human anatomy through one of the most complete and captivating collections of anatomical waxes in the world. Located inside the Cittadella dei Musei, it stands as a true scientific and artistic masterpiece.

The History of a Royal Commission

The extraordinary collection originated from the genius of Clemente Susini (1757–1814), a renowned Florentine ceroplast who worked for the La Specola Museum in Florence. The commission for these wax models dates back to 1801, when the Viceroy of Sardinia, Giovanni Balbiano di Belgioioso, decided to equip the University of Cagliari with a modern “Anatomical Theatre.”

The goal was to overcome the challenges of human dissections, which at the time were rare and difficult to preserve. With a team of collaborators, Susini created these models with meticulous care and scientific precision, providing medical students with a revolutionary and invaluable educational tool. Each model was made using real human anatomical specimens, ensuring absolute scientific accuracy.

The Collections: Anatomy Revealed

The museum houses a collection of twenty-three anatomical waxes displayed in wooden and glass cases that recreate the atmosphere of 18th-century teaching rooms. These models reveal the human body in its entirety, rendered with astonishing precision.

  • Hyperrealistic Details: the waxes reproduce the various systems of the human body—nervous, muscular, skeletal, and circulatory—with extraordinary accuracy. Every anatomical detail, from the tiniest veins to the muscle fibers, is portrayed so realistically that these models still hold great scientific value today.
  • Masterpieces of Ceroplastic Art: beyond their scientific importance, the models are genuine sculptural masterpieces. Often life-sized, the figures are presented in expressive and dramatic poses, blending anatomical rigor with artistic elegance. The delicate coloration and lifelike texture of the wax showcase Susini’s exceptional technical mastery.

Dual Importance: Between Science and Culture

The Museum of Anatomical Waxes holds a twofold significance:

  1. Historical and Scientific: it stands as a crucial testimony to the history of medicine and education at a time when modern teaching tools did not exist. The models helped overcome the ethical and practical limits of human dissection and are still studied today for their anatomical accuracy.
  2. Artistic and Cultural: the collection is an extraordinary example of how art served science. Susini combined sculptural skill with anatomical knowledge to create works that are now recognized as a unique cultural heritage admired by both scientists and art enthusiasts.
