The Museo Civico di Siena, housed within the magnificent Palazzo Pubblico, is far more than an art gallery — it is the living heart of Siena’s civic identity.
Through its celebrated frescoes, the museum offers an extraordinary window into the political, social, and cultural life of the ancient Republic of Siena, blending art and civic ethics in a way that is unique in the world.
Built between 1297 and 1310, the Palazzo Pubblico stands as one of Italy’s most elegant and symbolically powerful civic buildings. For centuries, it served as the seat of Siena’s republican government and the Council of the Nine, the magistrates who ruled the city.
Its graceful Gothic architecture, seamlessly connected to the towering Torre del Mangia, embodies both the grandeur and the civic pride of the Sienese Republic.
In many ways, the palace itself is the first masterpiece of the museum: its courtyards, frescoed halls, and decorative details tell the story of a city that built its identity on a profound balance between power, justice, and beauty.
The museum’s tour leads visitors through the very halls that once hosted Siena’s political assemblies. Each fresco and artwork is not merely decorative — it serves as a visual manifesto of civic virtue and responsibility.
🏛️ The Hall of the Globe (Sala del Mappamondo)
Once the meeting place of the Republic’s Great Council, this room is dominated by two of Simone Martini’s masterpieces.
⚖️ The Hall of Peace (Sala della Pace)
Formerly the seat of the Council of the Nine, this room contains one of the most remarkable artistic and political cycles of the Italian 14th century: Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s “Allegory of Good and Bad Government.”
Through powerful symbolism and vivid detail, Lorenzetti illustrates the contrasting effects of just and unjust rule — peace, prosperity, and justice under good governance, and war, oppression, and ruin under tyranny.
The frescoes are not merely art: they form a moral and civic guidebook, a visual constitution for the governors of Siena, unmatched in its ethical and philosophical depth.
Beyond these famous frescoes, the museum also preserves other notable works by Duccio di Buoninsegna and leading Sienese masters, along with banners, coats of arms, and historical relics that narrate the proud and complex story of Siena’s independence.
