Known as the most colourful island in Venice, Burano is a unique and charming village, inhabited by about 3,000 people and consisting of five hamlets separated by canals and connected by picturesque bridges. Its iconic image is given by the brightly painted houses, which offer evocative and irresistible views for photography lovers.
But Burano is also famous for a centuries-old tradition that has made it famous throughout the world: bobbin lace, patiently and skilfully crafted by local women, guardians of a refined and meticulous art, recounted in the Lace Museum, located in the main square. Unlike the frenetic pace of Venice's historic centre, Burano invites you to stroll slowly through its quiet streets, letting yourself be captivated by its authentic atmosphere. In addition to its aesthetic charm, the village offers typical flavours such as risotto di gò and Bussolà and Esse biscuits, sweets that symbolise its gastronomic tradition.
What to see in Burano
Visiting Burano means immersing yourself in a world of colours, art and traditions that intertwine in every corner of the island. The first stop is the Lace Museum, housed in the ancient Lace School, where more than two hundred examples tell the story of this refined art, still handed down today by master lace-makers. Not far away stands the famous Leaning Bell Tower, a symbol of the island along with the Church of San Martino Vescovo, which houses a precious painting by Tiepolo.
The beating heart of the village is Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi, Burano's only square, with its 16th-century well curb and statue of the composer after whom it is named. Don't miss the picturesque Casa di Bepi Suà, a riot of multicoloured geometric shapes that celebrates popular creativity. To admire the most evocative view of the island, cross the Tre Ponti bridge, the perfect vantage point at sunset. A few steps away, the Ponte Longo bridge leads to Mazzorbo, a green oasis of vegetable gardens and vineyards where Dorona wine is produced and where the prestigious Tenuta Venissa estate is located.
Finally, a boat trip takes you to the quiet island of San Francesco del Deserto, with its Franciscan monastery, for an authentic experience of lagoon spirituality.
Events in Burano
Burano is an island that combines art, tradition and taste through its typical events, which attract visitors from all over the world. Among the most popular is the Sagra del Pesce (Fish Festival), which usually takes place in September in Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi: here you can taste traditional lagoon dishes such as risotto di gò or fried fresh fish.
There is no shortage of music, shows and entertainment to liven up the island until late in the evening. The events dedicated to Burano lace are also eagerly awaited, celebrating this centuries-old art form that is symbolic of the Venetian island.
