“Cyprus and Italy” Exhibition at Castel Sant’Angelo: University of Siena’s Contribution

An international exhibition at Castel Sant’Angelo explores historical and cultural connections across the Mediterranean. Organized by Italian and Cypriot cultural bodies, the show displays around 120 archaeological items from museums in both countries and features scientific contributions from the University of Siena.

The exhibition highlights projects and research that trace exchanges, trade networks and social changes in the eastern Mediterranean. Exhibited objects document life and interconnections of communities between the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE, results of collaborative excavations and archaeological studies.

University of Siena’s role

The University of Siena participates in the scientific committee and the exhibition path through its long-running research at Erimi, in the Limassol district. The Italian mission at Erimi is one of the island’s most enduring projects and has contributed significantly to understanding community dynamics and economic transformations in the Bronze Age.

  • Scientific leadership: the research project is led by a prehistoric archaeology professor from the University of Siena, with many years of fieldwork at Erimi.
  • Anniversary: the 2026–2027 biennium marks the 20th anniversary of the Siena mission at Erimi.
  • Exhibition aim: to present to the public the exchange networks and cultural links connecting Cyprus and Italy through time.

Why visit

The exhibition offers a chance to understand, through original finds and scientific displays, Cyprus’s role in Mediterranean routes and the contribution of Italian archaeological research to heritage protection. It is particularly relevant for students, archaeology enthusiasts and cultural professionals interested in international cooperation and excavation methods.

Practical information

  • Location: Castel Sant’Angelo, Rome.
  • Open to the public until: 30 June 2026.
  • Visitor tips: allow time to read captions and the panels dedicated to the Erimi project to fully appreciate the scientific links between the finds and field research.

The University of Siena’s involvement underlines how long-term archaeological missions and international collaboration help reconstruct complex pasts and foster cultural dialogue across Mediterranean countries.
