Morterone, the village-lab: art, charging points and community in the

Morterone: a tiny village experimenting with revival

At 1,183 metres on the slopes of the Resegone, Morterone is Italy’s smallest municipality but has launched a regeneration pathway combining sustainability, culture and soft mobility. With about 31 registered inhabitants and a stable community of just over ten residents, the village functions as a practical laboratory for solutions suitable to other inland areas.

What to see and why visit

Morterone offers a mix of mountain scenery, a dispersed contemporary art museum and infrastructure for cycle tourism. It is not merely a scenic stop but a concrete case of how focused interventions can revive small territories.

  • Open‑air Contemporary Art Museum: more than thirty works placed throughout the village and landscape, freely accessible.
  • E‑bike infrastructure: five public charging stations with over 50 connectors, used to recharge about 1,700 electric bicycles in the past year.
  • eV‑Chalet: information hub powered entirely by photovoltaic panels, producing around 1.3 MWh and helping to avoid over 9 tonnes of CO2.
  • Local hospitality: basic services, places to eat and residents who share the village’s stories.

The project and its significance

The initiative began from combining technical expertise with a forward‑looking local administration to make energy autonomy a tool for development. A manifesto outlining the model promotes local energy production and management as levers to attract visitors, support services and encourage people to stay or return.

Practical information for visitors

  • Getting there: accessible from Ballabio via the SP63—about 15 km of winding road.
  • Elevation: 1,183 m a.s.l.; suitable for hikers and cyclists prepared for sustained climbs.
  • Facilities: distributed e‑bike charging points in the village; a trattoria and mountain huts nearby.
  • Recommended period: spring–summer and early autumn for trails and views; check weather and local openings before traveling.

Morterone stands as a practical reference for initiatives that aim to enhance historic village centers: where culture, sustainable mobility and renewable energy come together to give new life to a mountain community.
