At 1,183 metres on the slopes of the Resegone, Morterone is Italy’s smallest municipality but has launched a regeneration pathway combining sustainability, culture and soft mobility. With about 31 registered inhabitants and a stable community of just over ten residents, the village functions as a practical laboratory for solutions suitable to other inland areas.
Morterone offers a mix of mountain scenery, a dispersed contemporary art museum and infrastructure for cycle tourism. It is not merely a scenic stop but a concrete case of how focused interventions can revive small territories.
The initiative began from combining technical expertise with a forward‑looking local administration to make energy autonomy a tool for development. A manifesto outlining the model promotes local energy production and management as levers to attract visitors, support services and encourage people to stay or return.
Morterone stands as a practical reference for initiatives that aim to enhance historic village centers: where culture, sustainable mobility and renewable energy come together to give new life to a mountain community.
