Monumenta Italia at Palazzo Madama: rethinking monuments through a gender lens

Monumenta Italia presents a research-driven art project at Palazzo Madama that highlights the limited presence of monuments dedicated to or created by women in public spaces. The initiative includes a public lecture and an exhibition that document and reflect on the project's findings.

Practical information

  • Public lecture: 20 April 2026, 17:00, Sala Feste, Palazzo Madama. Open to the public.
  • Exhibition (Cantiere Madama): 22 April – 6 July 2026, located in the Piccola Guardaroba and the Gabinetto Cinese. The display features posters, postcards, videos and a banner documenting the project's stages.
  • Opening hours: Monday and Wednesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00; closed on Tuesdays. Ticket office closes one hour earlier.

Project aims

The project stems from a systematic survey of public monuments, fountains and statues dedicated to female figures across Piedmont and other Italian cities. The exhibited works translate survey data into visual and narrative forms, revealing how urban history has traditionally been narrated from a male-centered perspective.

The exhibition and related activities encourage reflection on how women are represented in public spaces and explore alternative monument forms to celebrate female biographies, ideas and contributions.

How to take part

Monumenta Italia is participatory: visitors are invited to share proposals and reflections via online forms and QR codes displayed in the exhibition. Collected contributions may be used in future editions and in the project's catalogue.
