Located in the municipality of Tarvisio, Monte Santo di Lussari is one of the most beloved destinations in Friuli thanks to its beauty and its sanctuary.

Are you ready to discover it with us?

The Sanctuary

The fame of the mountain is mainly due to the presence of the convent, dating back to the 1500s–1600s. Despite the damage suffered over the centuries, today it is one of the recently restored churches, known as the Church of the Three Peoples, as it welcomes numerous pilgrimages from the three neighboring linguistic groups: the Germanic (German), the Romance (Friulian and Italian), and the Slavic (Slovene).

The first chapel actually dates back to 1360, when a small statue of the Madonna and Child was found there. This iconography was later reinterpreted in the artistic renovation by the painter Tone Kralj, who decorated the presbytery with numerous scenes from the life of Mary, such as the Annunciation, the Flight into Egypt, the Finding of Jesus in the Temple, the Crucifixion, and the Coronation. Complementing these, the stained-glass windows depict scenes of the continuation of Christ’s work in the world.

Considered a sacred place to strengthen one’s faith—through the Way of the Cross and the Jubilee of Mercy—the church today stands as one of the most visited religious destinations, admired for both its spiritual significance and artistic beauty.

Other activities and directions

Beyond being a religious destination, Monte Santo di Lussari is also one of the most renowned ski resorts in the area. It can be reached via a cable car, 3,070 meters long with a capacity of 1,880 people, which in just 15 minutes takes skiers up to the village, where several competitions have been held, including European Cup and Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup races.

To reach the mountain, take the A23 Palmanova–Tarvisio motorway and exit at Tarvisio, then follow the signs to the hamlet of Camporosso, where you will find the Lussari cable car. The ticket costs €18.00 round trip per person, with discounts available for children, families, and seniors.

Around the village

In addition to the small village itself, the surrounding area offers numerous points of interest, including:

  • The historic center of Tarvisio, with the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (14th century), the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Loreto, and the Forest Museum.
  • Camporosso di Valcanale, an area known mainly for sports, but also home to a Gothic apse and a small church dedicated to Saint Dorothy, decorated with frescoes. Nearby, you can also find Roman funerary steles.
  • Lake Predil and the Fusine Lakes, wonderful examples of preserved natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes.

Don’t miss the wonders of this village and its surroundings!
