Marsala: Study Day on the Risorgimento at the San Pietro Monumental Complex

On 11 May 2026 the San Pietro Monumental Complex in Marsala will host a study day dedicated to the Risorgimento and the museum practices used to preserve and communicate historical memory. The event is organized by the Centro Internazionale di Studi Risorgimentali Garibaldini and is aimed at scholars, museum professionals, schools and the general public.

Program

• 11:00 – Session for schools: "The Risorgimento Today: Museum Narratives", curated by Giuseppe Todaro. Speakers include Cosimo Ceccuti and Cristina Vernizzi (former director of the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento, Turin).
• 16:30 – Conference: "The Risorgimento Today: Historical Representations and Museums". Institutional greetings followed by presentations on museums' role in historical outreach. The session will be chaired by Cristina Vernizzi.
• Contributions include Cosimo Ceccuti on "The Soul of a Collection"; remote links with Fondazione Brescia Musei; Roberta D’Adda and Giulia Paletti on the "Leonessa d’Italia" Museum in Brescia; Otello Sangiorgi on "The Risorgimento in Bologna"; local testimonies by Anna Giustolisi and Piero Gallo on "Two Families for Marsala: From Private to Public".

Aims and audience

The event aims to foster dialogue among museum directors, historians and the public on exhibition practices, strategies to enhance Risorgimento collections and the potential of digitization to engage communities and schools. Attendance is open to citizens.
