The Museo Civico Archeologico Michele Petrone in Vieste hosts Giorgio de Chirico. Return to the Mediterranean, an exhibition focused on the artist's relationship with Mediterranean imagery across his later work.

What to see

The show brings together about fifty works — oils, watercolours and drawings — from the Foundation’s collections, arranged to highlight how the Mediterranean functions for de Chirico as a real place, a historical memory and a symbolic landscape.

Exhibition layout

• The sea of painting: works from the 1940s–1960s revisiting the legacy of major European masters.
• The sea of the mind: neometaphysical pieces where mannequins and enigmatic interiors transform the sea into an inner landscape.
• The Ascent to Calvary: preparatory drawings and materials related to the artist’s principal sacred painting, revealing his spiritual concerns.
