MAO Turin launches the open call “We need your light”
The MAO – Museum of Oriental Art, Turin is asking the public to contribute personal lamps to create a large collective installation. The project repurposes domestic objects into a site-specific artwork that will be unveiled during Art Week in October.
When and where
Lamp drop-off is scheduled at the museum on 17 and 18 May 2026. Participants must book a time slot via Eventbrite.
Practical requirements
- Accepted items: lamps and chandeliers of various types, including vintage pieces, provided they are in good condition and delivered without light bulbs.
- Size and weight: maximum 15 kg and 2 metres in height. For larger items, contact the museum in advance (email: [email protected]).
- Safety: objects may undergo rewiring and anchoring adjustments for safety; these works could permanently alter the original condition.
- Packaging: deliver items in cardboard boxes with light, easily inspectable padding (e.g., bubble wrap). Avoid items with transformers.
- Limit: up to three lamps per person. CE-marked fixtures are preferred.
Loan formalities and return
On delivery you will need to complete and sign a loan form provided by the museum. Instructions for pick-up will be communicated: collection of items is expected by July 2027. The museum reserves the right to select which items will be used in the installation.
Share the story of your lamp
Participants can opt to share the personal story behind their object by selecting the “story” option in the booking form. Museum staff will record short interviews and footage during drop-off; these materials will be edited into a video that will be part of the exhibition, giving the objects a new narrative voice.
How to participate: quick checklist
