The village of Macchiagodena is dominated by the ancient castle, of Lombard or Angevin origin, around which the settlement developed with characteristic medieval stone houses. The territory is varied: gentle hills, plains, and pastures alternate with rocky walls. Around the village stretch coniferous forests, home to mushrooms and wild fruits such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, currants, and raspberries. The area is also renowned for its natural truffle grounds, where white truffles and black scorzone grow. Thanks to this environmental richness, LIPU has established a nature reserve.
What to see in the village
The Castle of Macchiagodena, built as a lookout fortress to control the borders, dominates a limestone spur with three sheer sides, making it almost impregnable. Within the enclosure, statues and stone sculptures are still preserved, including a large 13th-century lion on the eastern side. Over the centuries, however, the manor suffered damage due to natural disasters and, through various reconstructions, lost its military function, transforming into an elegant baronial palace.
In terms of sacred architecture, the most important building is the Church of San Nicola, of uncertain origin but certainly prior to the 17th century. In the heart of the village is also the San Nicola Village, a group of ten stone houses restored in 1992 at the will of Don Francesco Romano, the parish priest of the town, who had received them as a gift.
Finally, in the Fosso Pampalone area, it is possible to visit the archaeological excavation of an ancient Samnite cult settlement, a precious historical testimony of the territory.
Events in the village
In Macchiagodena, the calendar is rich in religious and civil festivals. On January 17, Sant’Antonio Abate is celebrated, with the blessing of animals in the morning and traditional bonfires in the evening. On July 15 and 16, the festivities for the Madonna del Carmine take place, with a picturesque picnic near the church dedicated to her. In August, on the 14th and 15th, the Assumption is celebrated, while the last Sunday is dedicated to Sant’Antonio. Among the civil events, the Polenta Festival in the hamlet of Caporio and the renowned Truffle Festival, both organized in August, stand out.
