Gio Ponti Space at ADI Design Museum: project outline and funding

Milan will host a new permanent space dedicated to Gio Ponti within the ADI Design Museum. The agreement signed on 15 April 2026 launches an expansion aimed at combining collection care with new modes of access and cultural production.

Key elements of the initiative — designed as a living hub for research, education and temporary exhibitions — are summarized below.

  • Area: an expansion of about 700 square metres.
  • Funding: total budget approximately €2 million, including €1 million from the Lombardy Region and the remainder from the ADI Foundation and partners.
  • Design: architectural proposal by engineer Maurizio Milan, featuring a steel-and-wood mezzanine respectful of the museum's post-industrial identity.
  • Timeline: works expected to start in summer 2026 and finish by December 2026, aiming for a permanent opening before the end of the year.
  • Curation and installation: scientific supervision by Fulvio Irace and installation curated by Matteo Vercelloni; the project favors a critical, operational reading of Gio Ponti's work.
  • Participation: a public seminar is planned for September 2026 to shape content, partnerships and collaboration with institutions, companies and the Ponti Archive.
  • Purpose: conceived as a cultural laboratory open to families, schools and professionals, with educational activities and thematic rotations.

The intervention favours fast, adaptable construction solutions and materials to create modular exhibition environments. The goal is to translate Gio Ponti's legacy into an active venue for cultural production, research and training, strengthening Milan's position in the international design scene.
