Italy's 'Cammini' law: measures to promote and valorize sustainable trails

Law 13 February 2026, n. 24: the new regulatory framework defines Italy's walking routes ('cammini') and introduces measures to enhance them, focusing on sustainability, slow travel and territorial diffusivity.

  • Definition: 'cammini' include itineraries of diffuse natural and cultural heritage, as well as waterways, lagoons and lakes, with potential European, national or regional relevance.
  • Objectives: promote use on foot or with soft mobility, ensure accessibility for people with disabilities, and encourage tourism based on slowness, sustainability and distribution rather than mass flows.
  • Local valorization: support for micro-entrepreneurship, family hospitality and the transmission of local traditions through mapping and information dissemination.
  • Governance: establishment of a national steering committee and a permanent table for coordination, monitoring and stakeholder consultation among ministries and local authorities.
  • Operational tools: quality standards, a national database for mapping, possible adoption of CAI signage, and promotional campaigns led by the Ministry of Tourism.
  • Research and training: the Ministries of Tourism and Culture may promote studies and collaborations with universities to deepen cultural, linguistic and environmental aspects of the routes.

The law seeks to integrate 'cammini' into Italy's tourism offer, promoting a model that enhances local heritage and fosters a more direct and responsible relationship between visitors and host communities.
