Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli announced that the Antonello da Messina panel—depicting an intense "Ecce Homo" on one side and "Saint Jerome the Penitent" on the other—will not have a permanent domicile. It will have an official residence at the Museo dell'Aquila, but its "domicile" will effectively be all of Italy, as the painting is intended to travel.
The double-sided panel was recently examined by the Minister at Sotheby's in New York. The piece, purchased by the Direzione generale Musei, features a crowned-with-thorns Christ in the "Ecce Homo" and a penitent Saint Jerome set in a rugged landscape on the reverse.
Designating the Museo dell'Aquila as the artwork's official residence is both symbolic and administrative: this museum, Italy's Capital of Culture for the year, already holds Renaissance works showing northern European influences—an important context for this Antonello piece.
The painting will return to Italy in the coming weeks and will be part of a program of exhibitions and loans allowing it to circulate among various museums. Specific dates and hosting institutions will be announced by the Direzione generale Musei and the Ministry once arrangements are finalized.
