Francesco Favo, CEO and general manager of ANM, argues that the art stops of Naples’ metro network should be treated as a museum. The system houses more than 300 artworks across Line 1 and Line 6, making it one of Italy’s most significant public art collections.
Favo stresses that alongside ordinary conservation and academy-led training projects, there are urgent needs for more extensive interventions on works affected by structural or technological issues. Key points include:
ANM has an internal office of qualified art historians and cooperates with the Restoration School of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and professional restoration start-ups: more than 40 training-restoration sites have already been completed. Still, many works were handed over without maintenance contracts and some, such as LeWitt’s Wall Drawings at Materdei, require complex re-execution works.
Preservation is also linked to preventing damage: Favo reports instances of vandalism and suggests adding an inspectors’ unit to station staff, pending municipal approval. On the operational side, ANM expects an in-house assignment that should improve monitoring and vehicle availability, increasing train frequency in the coming years.
Planned targets for Line 1 include:
The presentation underscores that Naples’ art metro stations require targeted policies and funding: they are not only transport infrastructure but a dispersed artistic heritage that demands planned investment and specialized maintenance.
