History and description
Built between 1448 and 1456 with the aim of creating a spectacular palace for the City Council, the Loggia del Lionello is a Venetian‑Gothic style structure characterized by a rectangular base and a façade with 10 pointed arches, a central balcony, and alternating bands of white and pink stone. It was restored several times due to events such as the 1511 Udine earthquake and the fire of 1876. Over the centuries, the building served as the town hall, as well as a venue for public ceremonies, performances, and assemblies.
Curiosities
Considered a kind of “stone book” that tells the political history of Udine through its coats of arms and symbols, the Loggia del Lionello recalls the Doge’s Palace in Venice in both decoration and form. Interestingly, it was not designed by an architect but by a goldsmith: Nicolò Lionello, who directed its construction, was a master in working metals and proportions.
Access
Freely accessible from the outside at any time, the structure can also be visited inside during events or special occasions, upon obtaining temporary permission from the Municipality.
How to reach it
Located in Piazza Libertà, one of Udine’s symbolic landmarks, the Loggia can be reached by car (bearing in mind the restricted traffic zones), by local bus or train from Udine station, or on foot.
An architectural synthesis of Udine’s history, the Loggia del Lionello is an unmissable location for its beauty and importance.
