Fountain of Piazza Mercato – the “madmen’s place” in Spoleto

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 10:23

History and description

The Fountain of Piazza Mercato is one of the most characteristic historic landmarks of Spoleto’s city center, located in the square of the same name, the beating heart of local life. Built in the 15th century, the fountain originally served the essential function of providing drinking water to the inhabitants, while also acting as a gathering point for the community. Made of local stone, it is distinguished by its simple yet elegant design, with a circular basin and a sculpted central structure, a symbol of Spoleto’s artistic tradition. Over the centuries, it has undergone several restorations but has always retained its role as an urban monument and social meeting place.

Curiosities

It is also known as the “fountain of the madmen” because anyone who walks three times around it, in the presence of a true Eugubino (a native of Gubbio), and is then sprinkled with water, receives the so‑called “madman’s license.” Today, it is also one of the most photographed tourist attractions in the city.

Access

The Fountain of Piazza Mercato is freely accessible at any time, as it is located in a public square.

How to reach it

The fountain is located in the historic center of Spoleto and can be easily reached on foot from Spoleto railway station. It is also accessible by city buses with stops nearby. Those arriving by car can use the public parking areas located at the edges of the historic center and then continue on foot through the pedestrian streets.
