Classical Neapolitan Song Nominated for UNESCO
The classical Neapolitan song tradition has been submitted for consideration as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The formal launch event is scheduled for 5 June 2026 at the Arena di Verona and will be broadcast live on RaiUno.
The campaign aims to highlight a musical repertoire that has played a central role in Italian culture, combining performances by notable artists with a scientific dossier documenting its significance.
- Designated ambassador: Sal Da Vinci, who will act as a public face for the nomination.
- Performers set to appear: Massimo Ranieri, Gigi D’Alessio, Serena Rossi, Vittorio Grigolo, along with international guests Placido Domingo and Patti Smith.
- Scientific dossier: prepared by a study group led by Renzo Arbore.
The program will feature landmark songs such as "Te vojo bene assaje", "Era de maggio", "’O surdato ’nnammurato" and "Dicitencello vuje", chosen to demonstrate the repertoire’s historical and social importance.
Those unable to attend can watch the live television broadcast on RaiUno. The nomination is a significant step toward securing international recognition for a living cultural heritage deeply rooted in Italy.
