Italy and India strengthen cooperation on culture, cinema and UNESCO

Italy and India have announced a deeper bilateral relationship, upgrading ties to a Special Strategic Partnership with priorities on cultural heritage, the audiovisual sector and tourism. UNESCO cooperation between Rome and New Delhi is explicitly part of the agenda.

The agreement can boost efforts to protect and promote Italy's UNESCO sites — from archaeological areas to historic cities — through joint promotion, conservation projects and cultural exchanges involving local authorities, museums and tourism operators.

Key practical takeaways for visitors and professionals:

  • Increased international visibility: joint promotional campaigns and film-related projects may raise interest in UNESCO sites such as Pompeii, Venice and the Colosseum.
  • Shared conservation initiatives: technical exchanges and coordinated plans for monitoring and safeguarding tangible and intangible heritage.
  • Cultural programmes and events: film festivals, exhibitions and retrospectives that link audiovisual production with historical heritage, enhancing both tourism appeal and professional training.
  • Sustainable tourism cooperation: initiatives aimed at promoting responsible tourism compatible with site preservation.

The Italian government has designated 2027 as the Year of Culture and Tourism, offering a focal point for international and national projects that highlight UNESCO heritage. Visitors can expect richer cultural offerings, while operators may find increased institutional attention and partnership opportunities.

Site managers and cultural organisations interested in international collaboration should follow official announcements and explore partnership proposals with Indian institutions, film producers and tourism agencies to capitalise on initiatives planned for 2027.
