Set on a plateau overlooking the Murgia of Matera, the village of Irsina has, for several years now, been listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
This village has been able to rediscover and enhance an artistic and religious heritage of great value, thus attracting the interest of artists and visitors from all over Europe.
In ancient times, the village was known as Montepeloso, due to its Roman and Norman dominations.
What to see in Irsina
The village is undoubtedly tied to its Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its Baroque façade and imposing bell tower.
Inside the cathedral is preserved the famous sculpture by Andrea Mantegna, depicting the city’s patron saint, Saint Euphemia.
Other places of interest include the Convent of San Francesco, Palazzo Janora, and the ancient city gates.
Events, culture and traditions
Thanks to its ancient farming tradition combined with a strong religious spirit, the village is lively throughout the year.
Among the main celebrations is the Feast of Saint Euphemia, held on September 16, featuring a procession, music, and typical Lucanian dishes.
What to see around Irsina
Just a few kilometers away lies Matera, famous for its Sassi and the Murgia Materana Park.
Heading north, one finds Genzano di Lucania, Palazzo San Gervasio, and the agricultural landscapes that characterize the Lucanian hinterland.
An enchanted village, far from mass tourism, offering tradition, culture, and the authentic flavors of the territory.
