The Historic Centre Committee of Modica holds a public meeting on Monday 13 April 2026 at 3:00 PM in the "Pietro Floridia" auditorium in Piazza Matteotti to prepare proposals for the City Council. The aim is to outline concrete actions to revive the historic centre, currently affected by depopulation and the closure of local shops.
Why action is needed
Tourism alone cannot sustain historic towns: without residents and basic services (grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies) these places risk becoming mere backdrops. Many neighbourhood shops have closed in recent years, lowering quality of life and reducing the appeal for potential new residents.
Tested measures and concrete proposals
Guidelines for effective policies
Recovery incentives are effective only if paired with integrated policies: local tax reductions, subsidised rents, support for merchant networks and promotion of services aimed at residents’ daily life rather than short-stay tourism.
An integrated approach—building renovation, proximity services and residency incentives—is the best chance for historic town centres to become lively, inhabited places while preserving their cultural and tourist value.
