Less than an hour from Milan, Gravellona Lomellina (Pavia) has become an urban workshop where art is integrated into everyday life. Launched in 1992, the initiative focuses on reclaiming public spaces with permanent artworks that enrich façades, alleys and communal areas.
Highlights
The goal goes beyond decoration: artworks aim to reactivate urban spaces, create gathering points and improve residents’ quality of life. The project has also promoted sustainable cultural tourism and strengthened local identity.
Festa dell’Arte
The highlight of the year is the Festa dell’Arte, scheduled from 31 May to 2 June 2026. During the festival the village becomes an open-air stage with performances, readings, markets and guided tours, offering visitors an immersive experience among the installations and renewed spaces.
Practical tips: allow enough time for a full walk through the historic center, look for artworks in hamlets like Barbavara, and join guided tours to learn about the social and historical context behind the artistic choices.
This example demonstrates how widespread public art can drive urban regeneration, delivering cultural, social and environmental benefits to a small community.
