Located beneath the level of Via Crociferi in central Catania, the underground complex called the Athlete's Portico has been reopened to the public. The site displays rich archaeological stratification documenting the city's Greco‑Roman phases and now offers a route combining scientific research with conservation work.
Recovery works were coordinated by the University of Catania within the PNRR Changes project, involving the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage and the Parco archeologico di Catania e della Valle dell'Aci. Activities included structural consolidation, artifact restoration and the installation of displays that allow visitors to observe ongoing conservation efforts.
The Athlete's Portico illustrates how historic urban areas preserve complex sequences that record continuity and change across centuries—from urban planning to public infrastructure and Mediterranean trade. Reopening the site highlights both the finds and the research and conservation practices that make them understandable.
The site is located close to Via Crociferi and is managed by the Parco archeologico di Catania e della Valle dell'Aci. Access is generally available through guided visits or organised tours that include explanations of restoration works and virtual reconstructions. For opening times, visit modalities and bookings, consult the Park’s official channels.
Scientific coordination: Daniele Malfitana (University of Catania).
Site management: Parco archeologico di Catania e della Valle dell'Aci (director Giuseppe D'Urso).
