Guardia Perticara: the Lucanian “open-air museum village”

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:22

Amid the valleys of the province of Potenza lies the village of Guardia Perticara, one of the most fascinating in southern Italy and listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Of ancient medieval origin, it has preserved its soul intact, with sandstone houses, narrow alleys, and picturesque corners that have earned it the name of an “open-air museum village.”

What to see in Guardia Perticara

Among the main attractions of Guardia Perticara are the Church of San Nicola di Mira, with its simple façade and panoramic bell tower, and the remains of the ancient medieval castle, which once dominated the village.

Events, culture and traditions

The medieval tradition still echoes in the events held in the village.

One of the most important is the Feast of San Rocco, celebrated in August, which enlivens the streets with processions and fireworks.

During the summer, the village also hosts cultural events, art exhibitions, and tastings designed to highlight the typical products of the area.

What to see around Guardia Perticara

Thanks to its central location, the village allows visitors to explore the Lucanian hinterland in just a few hours.

Nearby are other charming villages such as Aliano, Viggiano, and the Lucanian Apennine Val d’Agri-Lagonegrese National Park.

The latter is perfect for those seeking hiking trails and full immersion in nature.

All these features make Guardia Perticara a true journey where art, memory, and the excellent cuisine of Lucanian tradition coexist in perfect harmony.
