Located in Rignano Garganico, Paglicci Cave is among Italy's most significant archaeological sites for Paleolithic art and human history. Its stratified deposits, hearths, burials and over 45,000 finds document human presence up to about 11,000 years ago.
The cave is currently closed to the public for safety reasons and structural risk; the site lies on private land and requires conservation interventions. Most finds are kept by the Archaeological Superintendency, while a selection is on display at the local museum in Rignano Garganico, reopened with a multimedia layout in 2021.
Paglicci Cave sheds light on the emergence of artistic expression and symbolic thought. Animal depictions, stylized female forms and hunting scenes help reconstruct Paleolithic human-environment relationships and ritual practices.
The subject will be discussed at the conference "Paglicci Cave, a World Heritage Asset" in Rignano Garganico on 23 May 2026. For updates on research, conservation projects and possible openings, check announcements from local authorities and the Archaeological Superintendency.
