Paglicci Cave: the Paleolithic treasure of the Gargano at Rignano

Paglicci Cave: a Paleolithic treasure in the Gargano

Located in Rignano Garganico, Paglicci Cave is among Italy's most significant archaeological sites for Paleolithic art and human history. Its stratified deposits, hearths, burials and over 45,000 finds document human presence up to about 11,000 years ago.

Key features of the site

  • Wall paintings: red-ochre depictions including horses and handprints, with symbolic meanings and stylistic links to Franco-Cantabrian traditions.
  • Portable art: incised bones and pebbles, notably an ibex engraving dated to ~22,000 years ago, plus dynamic hunting scenes valuable for research.
  • Ritual evidence: burials and ochre use suggest complex symbolic and spiritual behaviours.

Conservation and access

The cave is currently closed to the public for safety reasons and structural risk; the site lies on private land and requires conservation interventions. Most finds are kept by the Archaeological Superintendency, while a selection is on display at the local museum in Rignano Garganico, reopened with a multimedia layout in 2021.

Why follow Paglicci research

Paglicci Cave sheds light on the emergence of artistic expression and symbolic thought. Animal depictions, stylized female forms and hunting scenes help reconstruct Paleolithic human-environment relationships and ritual practices.

Event and further information

The subject will be discussed at the conference "Paglicci Cave, a World Heritage Asset" in Rignano Garganico on 23 May 2026. For updates on research, conservation projects and possible openings, check announcements from local authorities and the Archaeological Superintendency.

Practical tips

  • The cave is not open to visitors: look for museum displays to view finds safely.
  • Refer to Superintendency publications and conference proceedings for scientific details.
  • Do not attempt unauthorized exploration; preservation of the site is essential.
