Where: Gagosian, Rome. On view until: July 31, 2026.
The gallery presents a group of roughly fifty photographs by American artist Francesca Woodman, renowned for portraits and self-portraits that fragment and recompose the body. Approximately one third of the works are rarely or never before exhibited.
The exhibition emphasizes Woodman's use of everyday objects as allegorical devices and her affinity with Surrealist imagery: teacups, shells, masks, eggs and other recurring motifs appear alongside veiled, exposed or partially hidden bodies. Her pictures blend literary and art-historical references with visual inventions that balance wonder and a wry sensibility.
Why visit: the show provides a focused look at Woodman's ability to turn quotidian items into symbolically charged and emotionally tense images, revealing the formal intelligence of an early but distinctive photographic practice.
Practical note: check the gallery for opening hours and entry conditions before attending. The exhibition runs through July 31, 2026.
