Nestled at the foot of the Orobie Alps, Gromo is one of the most visited medieval villages in Lombardy and is listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of Italy.”
In the Middle Ages, it was an important center for ironworking and the production of weapons, so much so that it earned the nickname “the Toledo of the Alps.”
What to see in Gromo
The heart of the village is Piazza Dante, one of the most scenic squares in the province of Bergamo, surrounded by historic buildings such as the town hall and Palazzo Milesi, home to the MAP Museum.
Two other highly visited landmarks are the Ginami Castle, built in the 13th century, and the Church of San Gregorio Magno, with its ancient organ.
Events, culture, and traditions
“Medieval Gromo” in summer brings the village back to life with parades in costume and falconry shows.
Another eagerly awaited event is the reenactment of the “Hunt for the Queen,” which transforms the village into a theatrical journey.
Finally, during the Christmas season, Gromo comes alive with markets, artistic nativity scenes, and plenty of entertainment with the event Borgo dei Sogni (“Village of Dreams”).
What to see around Gromo
From Gromo, you can easily reach the Orobie Alps, the Vodale mountain hut, and the Serio waterfalls, among the highest in Italy.
Just a few kilometers away is the locality of Spiazzi di Gromo, which offers ski facilities and trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
A village full of life both in summer and winter, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet while rediscovering nature far from mass tourism.
