On the International Day for Monuments and Sites, celebrated on April 18, the consumer association Codacons called on authorities to make heritage protection a permanent priority rather than a symbolic occasion. The association reports cases of decay, neglect and abandonment affecting monuments, archaeological sites and historic centers across Italy.
Codacons stresses that safeguarding cultural assets concerns not only historical preservation but also citizens' right to live in dignified and safe environments and the economic value tied to cultural tourism. Francesco Tanasi, the association's national secretary, stated that "every neglected monument is a wound for the whole community."
Codacons pledges to continue monitoring the situation and urges institutions to convert symbolic commemorations into effective and sustained policies to protect Italy's historical and artistic heritage.
