Gibellina Hosts Over 2,000 Sicilian Students for the 2026 Italian Capital of Contemporary Art

From February, Gibellina has opened its artistic sites to wide school participation: more than 2,000 students have visited as part of a regional call that encourages schools to engage directly with the city’s contemporary art heritage. The programme aims to inspire educational art projects and deepen knowledge of local artistic assets.

• Participating schools: 163 Sicilian institutions involved.
• Monitored period: from 24 February to 29 March 2026.
• Attendance at main venues:
  • Pietro Consagra Theatre (exhibition “Dal mare, dialoghi con la città” with MASBEDO and Adrian Paci): 4,008 visits.
  • Orestiadi Foundation: 6,495 visitors.
  • Contemporary Art Museum (MAC): 3,629 entries.

The influx of school groups has animated public spaces and walking routes: daily student groups tour exhibitions and permanent works, delivering direct benefits to local hospitality and dining services.

Gibellina also functions as a field laboratory for academic research: 120 second-year students from the Master’s degree in Architecture at the University of Palermo conducted a site visit to identify project areas near Piazza 15 Gennaio. Their proposals, focused on artist residencies and services, will be developed further through site analysis and a year-end workshop.

Significance: the initiative reinforces art education and civic awareness, helping young people understand and engage with contemporary art, architecture and landscape.
