Giacomo Balla at MART Rovereto: the style of the avant-garde

MART presents a monographic exhibition dedicated to Giacomo Balla, bringing together in Italy for the first time the complete collection from the Fondazione Biagiotti Cigna and the Laura and Lavinia Biagiotti collection. The display pairs paintings with furniture, garments and design objects to illustrate the artist’s vision of a “total art”.

Why visit

  • More than 200 works showing how Balla transferred pictorial motifs (wedges, velocity vortices, abstract arabesques) onto everyday objects and fashion items.
  • A dialogue with MART’s holdings, which include important Futurist materials and works by Fortunato Depero.
  • Recommended for art history enthusiasts and those interested in the crossroads of art, fashion and design in the early 20th century.

Curators and collection

The exhibition, curated by Beatrice Avanzi and Fabio Benzi, showcases the important private collection assembled by Laura Biagiotti together with Gianni Cigna and later promoted by the Fondazione Biagiotti Cigna. The route highlights Balla’s practice of extending painterly devices to furniture, objects and garments, helping to modernise everyday items.

Visitor tips

  • Check the museum’s website for side events, guided tours or timetable changes before your visit.
  • Allocate at least a couple of hours to see the exhibition and the MART permanent collections.
  • The show is suitable for both specialised audiences and newcomers to Futurism.
