History and description
Located on a hill that has always hosted Celtic or Roman settlements, the Fortress of Osoppo played a mainly defensive role over the centuries, passing into the hands of the Republic of Venice against the Habsburgs, the French during the Risorgimento, the Italians against the Austrians, and so on, until its demilitarization and recognition as a monument in 1923. The main feature of the structure is its stratification, which brings together several styles, from medieval to 20th century, and includes two batteries with cannons positioned to the south and north, the Church of San Pietro dating back to the 13th century, and a series of terraces originally used for lookout purposes.
Curiosities
In addition to being a venue for events and historical reenactments, the site is linked to the legend of the Cave of Saint Colomba, where the protector of Osoppo is said to have taken refuge, although it is not open to visitors.
Access
Open free of charge from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the area requires an entrance fee only for guided tours upon reservation.
How to reach it
Since it is located on a hill, the fortress can be reached on foot or by bike, but it is advisable to use a car and take SS13 Via Fabris.
Visiting the Fortress of Osoppo allows you to fully immerse yourself in the military history of different peoples and, by walking through it, to experience a complete journey through history, culture, and landscape.
