Forest cover in Italy has increased over recent decades, now accounting for more than a third of the national territory. Yet, greater extent does not automatically mean better ecological condition: wildfires, biodiversity decline and land take undermine the resilience and quality of forest ecosystems.
National inventories indicate forest area exceeds 11 million hectares, roughly 38% of the territory. Italy's woodlands are varied, including deciduous beech and chestnut stands, evergreen Mediterranean formations, and alpine conifer forests.
Forests play crucial roles: carbon sequestration, soil protection against erosion and landslides, water cycle regulation and habitat provision. Their capacity to retain carbon in biomass and soil is an important contribution to climate mitigation.
Despite larger forest extent, Italian woodlands face multiple pressures:
Visitors to parks and woodlands can help protect forests through everyday actions:
Italy's expanding forest area is encouraging, but preserving green quality requires coordinated action: fire prevention, sustainable management, curbing land take and conserving biodiversity. Outdoor enthusiasts can contribute directly by adopting responsible behaviors during hikes and other nature activities.
