Cinque Terre: the quieter trail from Vernazza to Levanto via Punta Mesco

Autore: Redazione 04/04/2026 17:43

An alternative route to escape the crowds

If you want an outdoor experience focused on nature and wide sea views without the busiest paths, the trail linking Vernazza to Levanto via Punta Mesco is an excellent option. This is not the classic Sentiero Azzurro: it’s a quieter route with open coastal panoramas and shaded sections through Mediterranean vegetation.

Route features

The trail is roughly 5 km long and typically takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace. The elevation gain is moderate, around 300 meters. The surface alternates between dirt paths, stone steps and rocky tracks; there are no technical climbing sections, but some exposed stretches require careful footing.

How to get there

Start either from Vernazza or Levanto; both towns are well connected by train, making the hike accessible without a car. From Vernazza, head up toward the church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia and follow signs for the detour to Punta Mesco/Levanto. From Levanto, follow the southern track until the junction for Punta Mesco.

What you’ll see

The trail offers several spectacular viewpoints: after the initial switchbacks you’ll look back over Vernazza and later Monterosso. Punta Mesco is the standout promontory with sweeping views along the coast. You’ll pass holm oak woods, aromatic clearings and old stone terraces once used for vines and olives.

Practical tips

  • When to go: early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people.
  • Gear: at least 1 liter of water per person, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes and a lightweight jacket.
  • Weather: avoid the trail after heavy rain—parts can become slippery.
  • Safety: tell someone your plan, carry a charged phone and be cautious on exposed sections.

Best season

Spring and autumn are ideal: mild temperatures, lush vegetation and reduced visitor numbers. Summer may be hot and crowded, which can lessen the enjoyment of the walk.

Who it’s for

This hike suits walkers who are comfortable on uneven trails with moderate elevation gain. No technical mountaineering skills are required, but basic trail experience is recommended.

Summary: the Vernazza–Punta Mesco–Levanto trail is a short but rewarding way to experience the Cinque Terre in a quieter, more natural setting: a few kilometers, big views and nature at the center of the experience.
