Fénis, nestled in the heart of the Aosta Valley, is a village that boasts one of the most evocative medieval castles in Europe, Fénis Castle, an icon of the Challant family and an authentic symbol of the region. Strolling among its crenellated walls and frescoed courtyards is like taking a step back in time, but the village's charm does not end with its castle.
Fénis is a place where history, nature and culture intertwine harmoniously.
What to see in Fénis
Visiting the village of Fénis means immersing yourself in a heritage that combines art, history and tradition. The main attraction is undoubtedly Fénis Castle, one of the most famous medieval manors in the Aosta Valley, capable of fascinating adults and children alike with its crenellated towers, frescoed courtyards and fairytale atmosphere that takes you back in time.
Next to the castle is the Museum of Traditional Aosta Valley Crafts (MAV), where over 800 wooden and stone artefacts showcase the creativity and ingenuity of Aosta Valley craftsmen, with educational areas for children. But Fénis is not just about culture: nature lovers can discover the green area of Tzanté de Bouva, with a playground, sports area and a cycle path that winds its way through oak and birch trees. Walks to the little church of Saint-Julien or the picturesque Val Clavalité complete an itinerary rich in panoramic views, making Fénis an unmissable stop in the Aosta Valley.
Events and traditions in the village
The village of Fénis is not only famous for its castle, but also for the traditions and events that enliven the village throughout the year, transforming it into a meeting point between culture, folklore and conviviality.
One of the most eagerly awaited events is “Castello in fiera” (Castle Fair), which brings markets, music and shows to the foot of the castle and its inner courtyards, creating an evocative atmosphere that combines medieval magic with the energy of popular festivals. In autumn, the spotlight turns to the fruit that symbolises the season, with the “Châtaigne d'or”, one of the oldest chestnut festivals in the Aosta Valley: three days dedicated to roasted chestnuts, authentic flavours and the discovery of rural traditions.
These events, together with moments of socialising and religious celebrations, reveal the authentic soul of the village and strengthen its ties with its roots. Taking part in the events in Fénis means immersing yourself in the most authentic culture of the Aosta Valley.
