Agreement to enhance the Bagno Grande archaeological site
The Ministry of Culture has signed an agreement with the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni and the University for Foreigners of Siena to strengthen protection, research and public access at the Bagno Grande archaeological area, an Etruscan-Roman sanctuary that has yielded important finds in recent years.
Purpose of the agreement: to reinforce artifact conservation, support scientific excavation campaigns, establish an international research hub and promote cultural and territorial development.
Planned actions:
- Resumption and expansion of excavation campaigns involving students and researchers;
- Restoration and conservation of artifacts and ancient structures;
- Creation of a museum dedicated to finds from the sanctuary;
- Development of an international hub for research and cultural fruition;
- Formation of a participatory Foundation to coordinate and manage long-term activities.
According to Minister Alessandro Giuli, the agreement is “a model of collaboration between institutions, universities and the territory,” aiming to combine heritage protection, scientific advancement and local growth. The mayor of San Casciano dei Bagni highlighted the deal as a substantial step for the community and the site’s future.
The timeline foresees the resumption of excavation campaigns in June, the imminent start of the construction site for the international hub and the staged realization of the museum to house the recovered materials.
Impact for visitors: the project aims to improve site accessibility, offer more structured guided visits, provide educational activities and create a scientific and cultural destination for both domestic and international audiences.
